Health Insurance That Covers Cervical Cancer

August 6th, 2010
Carlos Diez asked:

Cervical Cancer is the third most common cancer of the female reproductive system. It’s classified as either pre-invasive or invasive. Pre-invasive cancer ranges from minimal cervical dysplasia, in which the lower third of the epithelium contains abnormal cells, to carcinoma in situ, in which the full thickness of epithelium contains abnormally proliferating cells. If left untreated in may progress to invasive cervical cancer, depending on the form. In invasive disease, cancer cells penetrate the basement membrane and can spread directly to contiguous pelvic structures or disseminate to distant sites by way of lymphatic routes. In most cases the histological type is squamous cell carcinoma, which varies from well differentiated cells to highly anaplastic spindle cells.

When covered under a managed care health insurance plan certain preventative treatment may be tested for to detect and terminate the progression of cancer if treated early. Such testing may include certain diagnostic procedures such as a Papanicolaou test more commonly known as a Pap smear to identify abnormal cells, and a colposcopy which determines the source of abnormal cells evidenced on the Pap test. There is also the Cone biopsy which is performed if endocervical curettage is positive. Another useful test is known as the Vira/Pap test which is used to permit examination of the specimens deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) structure to detect Human Papiloma Virus a predicator to cancer cells. Additional studies such as a lymphangiography, cystography, and major organ and bone scans, can detect metastasis.

But What Do You Do If You Have No Insurance And Have Cervical Cancer?

There are a few organizations that can help or provide financial assistance if you have been diagnosed with Cervical Cancer. First try contacting the American Cancer Society a non profit enterprise funded through donor volunteer groups. Second try contacting The Angel Network a private equity fund sponsored by Oprah Winfrey dedicated to assisting individuals diagnosed with the debilitating disease. Finally there are some insurance companies that will provide health insurance, however there is usually a limited open enrollment period for acceptance of an application.

We Can Help.

If you are diagnosed with Cervical Cancer you will need financial assistance to compensate the medical facilities for a multitude of expenses. Acute clinical staging will determine the type of treatment. Pre-invasive lesions may be treated with total excisional biopsy, cryosurgery, laser destruction, conization and sometimes even a hysterectomy costing thousands. Therapy for invasive squamous cell carcinoma may include radical hysterectomy and radiation therapy requiring additional out of pocket expenditures. Pelvic exenteration might also be performed for recurrent cervical cancer.

Complications of the surgery itself can run up more charges because of bladder dysfunction, formation of lymphocytes or seromas after lymphadenctomy, and pulmonary embolism. Other possible complications to be considered in cost are the radiation therapy itself. When it is all said and done the cost of treating a single case of localized (early stage) cervical cancer can average anywhere from $25,000.00 to $35,000.00 dollars and while the cost of treating a single case of distant (later stage) cervical cancer can range anywhere from $40,000.00 to $50,000.00 dollars so you will definitely need help.

Health & Stress

July 16th, 2010
Pradeep Mahajan asked:

Stress is an ignorant state. It believes that everything is an emergency — Natalie Goldberg, Wild mind.

Both men and women live hectic pace of life today. They try to balance the demands at work as well as at home. They try to balance limited means (time, money & resources) & unlimited demands. The inability to balance these expresses itself in terms of stress, anxiety and tensions.

Stress, fear, anger, guilt, anxiety, jealousy etc are negative emotions which have a definite impact on our body.

Suffering brings disease & contentment brings good health.

A person with disturbed mind can not possess a healthy body. Health is a reflection of physical, mental, spiritual & in today’s circumstances, economic well-being.

Stress hampers the function of immune system. Psychological stress activates the adrenal glands to discharge stress hormones called cartisol.

Temporarily it relieves us from stress but in the long run it affects our health. Stress results in diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, ulcers, cancer, depression etc.

Stress & Digestion

Our thoughts have profound effects on our digestion. Body can assimilate nutrients from food only if you eat in a relaxed environment. Your state of mind is a critical factor at mealtimes.

Treat meal times as sacred. Follow your hunger signals. Eat only upto ¾ th of your eating capacity to ensure proper digestion.

Foods that ease stress

When our body is under stress the demand for nutrients is more as more key nutrients are burned up.

Vitamin A, C, E & mineral selenium help the body to fight the negative effects of stress.

Eat foods that are rich in anti-oxidants. Foods like — dry fruits, leafy vegetables, bananas, figs, fish, whole grains, curd, pulses etc.

Anti oxidants help fight stress by preventing free radical damage.

Vitamin C

Brain has more concentration of Vitamin C than in any other part of body. It is a powerful anti-oxidant. People under stress may consume between 500 to 1000 mg of vitamin C per day as vitamin C is used up more when you are under stress.

Fruits

Fruits are ideal in reducing stress. They are rich in anti-oxidants. Fruits are good in the sense you do not have to fight obesity even if you eat more.

Vegetables

Cabbage, cauliflower & broccoli are rich in bio-flavinoids which are powerful anti-oxidants. The bio-flavinoids protects us from free radicals which are generated during stress.

Sleep & keep stress away

Allow yourself to sleep at least for 8 hours. This gives your body and its metabolic processes time to recover. It re-energises your body. Severe sleep deprivation leads to psychosis.

Try a glass of warm milk — age-old grandmother’s remedy — to keep insomnia away.

Think positive to de-stress

Vegetables and fruits have a cleansing effect on your body. Similarly positive attitude has a cleansing effect on your mind. Keep away negative feelings like — hatred, jealousy, greed anger etc — by maintaining a positive attitude.

The outside world is full of challenges and uncertainty. Completely eliminating stress may not be possible, so goal could be — manage stress and stay calm.

Health Insurance For Unmarried Individuals

June 17th, 2010
Simon Bukai asked:

Commonly, and unluckily, employers do not usually extend the coverage to unmarried partners if they are offering health insurance coverage to the spouses of employees. Employers are not required to offer health insurance to any employees, spouses, or “domestic partners” (the term are often used to include the same-sex couples and unmarried opposite-sex couples, as well as common law marriages) as what is stated under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). ERISA also does not constrain employers that provide health insurance for employees and legal dependents to extend coverage to domestic partners.

However, hundreds and thousands of employers across the country have started offering domestic partner benefits in the last several years. The number of employers continues to grow recently. Employment experts anticipate that this new trend will continue as small companies begun to follow the lead of large employers that have introduced domestic partner benefit plan in the recent months.

In addition to that, several state and local laws have currently been passed in favor of domestic partner rights. States like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle do have ordinances that require all businesses with municipal contracts to offer same-sex benefits for unmarried couples. In Vermont, they recently achieve the country’s first “civil union” law. This law grants same-sex couples nearly all of the benefits that the state’s married couples are entitled with. Prearrangements about health insurance are still being written as of now, and the result is still unknown up to this moment.

The level of coverage varies depending on the employer when benefits are offered to domestic partners. Domestic partner benefits might possibly include long-term care, group life insurance, family and bereavement leave, and the most common are, health, dental, and vision insurance. The characterization of domestic partner may possibly vary from employer to employer. Other companies include same-sex couples, unmarried opposite-sex couples, and common law marriages. Some only cover only same-sex partners on the conditions that opposite-sex couples can receive spousal benefits by getting married, while same-sex couples do not have this option. Mindless of how the term is being described, employers do typically still require domestic partner to sign an affidavit which clearly states an assurance that they are in a lasting and committed relationship. They may also possibly require that a couple live together for a specified period of time before they are qualified for the benefits a domestic partner can basically get.

Health Plans For Your Budget

May 30th, 2010
Tracy McManamon asked:

Obtaining health insurance in Ohio for your family may be more affordable than you think. Prices are set by the state of Ohio and several companies offer policies that can be tailored to your budget. Whether you need short term gap coverage or a comprehensive policy it is worth pursuing.

It is very difficult to make sense of the different types of policies that are offered and many people have found it helpful to work with an independent insurance agency to obtain coverage. The agent will be working for you and will use his contacts to negotiate the best deal with the health insurance companies. Anthem, Aetna, Medical Mutual, UnitedChoiceOne and Humana all do business in the buckeye state.

Anthem offers several policies that are considered to be among the best in the state. The Smart Sense plan is a managed care policy which offers the best coverage to subscribers who go to physicians and hospitals that are within the network. $35 dollar co-pays are charged for doctors visits and some preventive care services are covered like pap smears and mammograms. Prescription coverage is also offered with the plan. Dental and term life insurance can also be added at an extra cost. Smart Sense provides one of the most comprehensive health plans available.

Medical Mutual of Ohio offers a similarly priced plan with a few variations. The SuperMed One value plan is also a managed care policy which requires the use of in network providers to achieve the best savings. It covers 70 percent of the cost of all medical care in network with maximum out of pocket expenses in a single year capped at $3500 per individual. The Medical Mutual value plan does include prescription coverage but only if you use generic drugs.

There are a number of other variations on these plans plus many others that may work better for you. Many people are choosing to set up health care savings accounts instead of going with traditional coverage. Ask your independent insurance agent what is in your best interest. They will be able to provide you with quotes to all of these plans.

What If Scrapple is a Health Food?

May 17th, 2010
Margie King asked:

Philadelphia is known as a city dedicated to high fat delicacies such as cheese steaks, hoagies and scrapple. Condemned as dripping in saturated fat, these staples of the Philadelphia diet are publicly shunned by the health conscious, until the call of the grease steers even their cars uncontrollably to Pat’s Steaks in South Philly for a shameful rendezvous with the forbidden.

But what if saturated fat were not the devil incarnate? What if we need saturated fat in our diets?

Sally Fallon Morell, author of “Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats,” makes just this case. Asking the question “What is a healthy diet?,” she surveys remote populations not exposed to the standard Western diet, and gleans the common denominators among traditional healthy populations. One of her conclusions is that all healthy traditional diets include saturated fats from animals and animal products (e.g., butter, milk and eggs). Another is that traditional healthy diets use all parts of the animal, including bones, fat and organ meats. No boneless skinless chicken breasts or low fat yogurt for them.

Very slowly there is growing an increased recognition that saturated fats play an important role in good health in strengthening the immune system, liver and bones, supporting lung and kidney function and maintaining the integrity of cell walls. Recent studies have also challenged the widely accepted opinion that coronary heart disease is caused by consumption of animal fats, and many experts are now drawing a distinction between high quality meats and low quality processed meats like hot dogs, pepperoni and sausage. Morell’s theory that the rapid increase in heart disease from 1920 to 1960 correlated with a decrease in the consumption of saturated fats and an increase in processed vegetable fats and hydrogenated trans fats, is now becoming more widely held and supported by new research.

In response to the no or low saturated fat craze, many dieters have completely excluded red meat from their diets. It is not really a good strategy considering the benefits of saturated fat. Moreover, beef and chicken do not contain exclusively saturated fat but also significant amounts of healthy polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats which actually contribute to heart health.

In Nourishing Traditions, Morell recommends a diet rich in high quality, organic, grass-fed meat and dairy products. That means no more boneless, skinless chicken breasts but a whole roasted chicken and an occasional steak without guilt. Also skip the fat free milk and yogurt in favor of the whole versions. It might not include cheese steaks but perhaps organic scrapple, if you could find such a thing, would qualify.

Health Insurance Marketing

May 11th, 2010
Ross Bainbridge asked:

Of all types of insurance, health insurance is the most controversial because of the conflict between the insurance company’s need to remain afloat and the customer’s need to have insurance. Insurance companies’ commissions on health plans are very low, thus some companies struggle to make a profit. It used to be that the premiums paid by younger, healthy clients were low compared to those paid by elderly clients. The reason for this was so that the insurance company could sustain the output in claims of the elderly clients. However, these days, the premiums are the same for a completely healthy young adult as they are for an elderly man who just had by-pass surgery.

Since we are already dealing with this kind of scenario, what we can do now is change the public’s perception of it. Connect yourself with companies whose employees need a health plan. Go to crowded areas and advertise. Give out flyers and hang banners. Offer free medical check ups upon signing up. Give the public a chance to like you and the insurance company you are representing. If you’ve done this already, sustain the relationship.

Listen to what people have to say. Once common complaint is that insurance companies do not announce that they have increased the rates of their insurance premiums. This defeats the purpose of giving that extra service to the customers. Inform them in advance and let them know why there is a need for an increase.

Do not charge people different rates. This gives them the feeling that they are being fairly untreated and that the insurance companies are just after the profit and not the welfare of its customers.

When a claim is made, particularly for a very sizeable amount, help out in processing the paperwork. Do not let bureaucracy eat up the service so that the one making the claim will just eventually give up. This used to be a common practice in the insurance business and should never be repeated.

And lastly, try to help out those self-employed individuals who are applying for health insurance. Complaints about not being able to accommodate the self-employed are common because health insurance companies are too busy accommodating those employer-sponsored clients. Remember, those self-employed individuals may eventually strike it big. Or maybe they are already big and are just fishing for an efficient health insurance company.

Health Hazards of Cigar Smoking

April 20th, 2010
kimberly valerio asked:

We have all heard of the hazards associated with smoking cigarettes, but what are the risks of cigar smoking?  Are the risks of smoking cigars just as dangerous, or more so?  According to the National Cancer Instituted, regular cigar smoking can result in a major health threat.  Scientific research has linked cigar smoking with cancers of the larynx, lungs, esophagus, and oral cavity.  Newer research also indicates that cigar smoking may be strongly linked to the development of cancer in the pancreas.  Doctors also caution that individuals who regularly inhale while enjoying a cigar are also at greater risk of developing lung disease and heart problems.

The health threats of cigar smoking appear to increase dramatically in those individuals who smoke regularly and inhale while smoking.  Someone who smokes three to four cigars each day will him or herself at eight times the risk of developing some kind of oral cancer than a nonsmoker.  Unfortunately, we do not yet know the health risks of smoking the occasional cigar.  It seems clear however that smoking cigars on a daily basis can pose serious health risks.

Many individuals wonder if cigars are as addictive as cigarettes. Many wonder why, for instance, so many people become addicted to cigarettes, and not cigars?  The truth is that any tobacco product can become addictive because it contains nicotine.  Witness the effects of smokeless tobacco products on individuals.  These products, such as chewing tobacco, can become very addictive, simply because they contain tobacco, which in turn contains nicotine.  Many cigar smokers do not inhale deeply, thus causing the nicotine to be inhaled superficially.  Cigarette smokers tend to inhale, causing the nicotine to be absorbed faster and more readily by the lungs.  Even though most cigar smokers inhale the nicotine more superficially, it is still possible to become addicted if the user smokes cigars on a regular basis.

If nicotine is so addictive, why don’t more cigar smokers smoke more often?  It appears that more people avoid becoming ‘hooked’ on cigars for several reasons.  The most obvious reason is that the nicotine is inhaled much more superficially than in regular cigarette smoking, causing less nicotine to be absorbed by the body.  Also, cigars are not as readily accessible as cigarettes.  They are viewed by most as a luxury item, saved for special occasions and used infrequently.  However, when cigars are smoked on a regular basis, they can become addictive.  The health risks of any kind of smoking increase dramatically as frequency of use increases.

Health Tips

April 13th, 2010
John Clifford Entorum asked:

Health

Your health should be the number one priority in your life. Health is the general condition of a person in all aspects. It is also a level of functional and/or metabolic efficiency of an organism, often implicitly human. The physical environment is perhaps the most important factor that should be considered when classifying the health status of an individual. This includes factors such as clean water and air, safe houses, communities and roads all contribute to good health.

Jogging:

For heart health, the benefits of jogging is no need to be doubted. However, to reduce fat and weight, it is not effective. Why is hard to loose weight by jogging?

Here is an explanation of why a body remain fat despite jogging every day.

Constant movement during jogging including aerobic activity can strengthen the heart and respiratory muscles. The impact on health is that breathing becomes more healthy and cardiac pressure will go down so that the risk of hypertension decreases.

However, to burn fat, jogging is less effective. The body will only process the fat into energy if the calories needs obtained from sugar and carbohydrates are not sufficient.

One way to reduce fat is through exercise. Jogging is an exercise which requires lots of energy, so many people do it with the expectation of energy reserves in the form of fat will burned more efficiently. In fact, some people fail to lose weight despite jogging every day.

“The body is like the best machine that constantly adapts to anything. The more often you jog, the body will be more prepared for the next jog.”

Jogging which is done frequently will only cause energy metabolism becomes more efficient. Adaptation which is performed by the body reduce the energy needed so not a lot of calories are burned.

Besides not being effective in loosing weight, jogging is also not good for your joints. When you jog, the joints will have to take 2.5 times the weight so vulnerable to injury.

The joints which are most prone to acute pain attack due to jogging, are the ankles and the knees. If often experience repeated pressure, these joints wear out faster.

Jogging is always considered as an exercise that can increase your metabolism and effective for weight loss.

5 Signs of a Healthy Heart:

If your heart stops beating for just a few minutes, followed by the stop of blood circulation, than your valuable life will end. That is why the prevention of heart disease and blood vessels are very important and highly stressed. Generally there are five vital signs of a healthy heart, which are:

1. Cholesterol

Pretend that the LDL or bad cholesterol is a fire and HDL or good cholesterol as a fireman. “A good firefighter is usually able to prevent long term damage.”

The higher the HDL cholesterol level, the lower the risk of ateroklerosis occurrence. For healthy heart, the bad cholesterol’s target is no more than 130 mg / dl and HDL should be higher than 40 mg / dl. HDL cholesterol levels tend to increase with exercise, lose weight, and eating lots of fiber

2. Blood pressure

If left unchecked in recent years, high blood pressure can damage arteries throughout the body so that the blood vessel wall will be thickened and rigid and clogged so blood flow to vital organs are blocked. Optimal blood pressure are lower than 120/80 mmHg.

Variation of various foods with different combination’s of the right nutrients will be beneficial to blood pressure. Various studies have also shown an effective stress reduction also lowers blood pressure. Spanish researchers say, the consumption of aspirin every day also decreased the systolic pressure of 6.8 mmHg and 4.6 mmHg diastolic pressure.

3. Heartbeat

Life is not in your hands, but in your heart. Knowing the number of heartbeats per minute (resting heart rate) is one way to predict the age. In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine stated, a man who has a resting heart rate above 75 beats per minute (bpm) have three times greater risk of heart attack. Normal pulse is 65 bpm.

“When you do a cardio workout with low intensity and add a high intensity every two weeks, the heart rate per minute will be reduced.” Do exercise at least 30 minutes with 60-80 percent of the maximum amount of heart rate.

4. Fasting blood sugar

Fasting blood sugar levels is a sign of whether there is any risk of diabetes. The higher your blood sugar levels, the greater the risk of developing diabetes. “People with diabetes have a greater risk of heart disease, kidney, and eye disorders.”

To reduce levels of fasting blood sugar, we need to increase the body’s ability to use blood sugar, or in other words to increase insulin sensitivity. The best way to achieve this is to reduce weight.

5. C-reactive protein

C-reactive proteins or CRP is a plasma protein produced by the liver in response to infection, injury, and inflammatory processes. High levels of CRP indicate inflammation in the body. Because heart disease is due to inflammation in the arterial wall, CRP can be used as a common marker of heart disease risk.

Elevated levels of CRP are usually accompanied by increased cholesterol. A high CRP level, more than 1 milligram per liter, also associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. CRP measurement is done by taking blood from the elbow or the back of your palms.

To Improve Sleep:

1. Sprinkle just-washed sheets and pillowcases with lavender water. The scent has been shown in studies to promote relaxation, which can lead to better sleep.

2. Buy a new pillow. Katz says that studies show that pillows with an indent in the center can enhance sleep quality and reduce neck pain. Also, try a “cool” pillow — one containing either all-natural fibers or a combination of sodium sulfate and ceramic fibers that help keep your head cool.

3. Eat a handful of walnuts before bed. You’ll be giving yourself a boost of fiber and essential fatty acids along with the amino acid tryptophan — a natural sleep-inducer.

To Improve Stress Control:

1. Give your partner a hug every day before work. Studies show this simple act can help you remain calm when chaos ensues during your day, Katz says.

2. Have a good cry. It can boost your immune system, reduce levels of stress hormones, eliminate depression, and help you think more clearly.

3. Twice a day, breathe deeply for three to five minutes

To Improve Nutrition:

1. Buy whole foods — whether canned, frozen, or fresh from the farm — and use them in place of processed foods whenever possible.

2. Reject foods and drinks made with corn syrup, a calorie-dense, nutritionally empty sweetener that many believe is worse for the body than sugar, says Katz.

3. Start each dinner with a mixed green salad. Not only will it help reduce your appetite for more caloric foods, but it also will automatically add veggies to your meal.

To Improve Physical Fitness:

1. Do a squat every time you pick something up. Instead of bending over in the usual way, which stresses the lower back, bend your knees and squat. This forces you to use your leg muscles and will build strength.

2. Every time you stop at a traffic light (or the bus does), tighten your thighs and butt muscles and release as many times as you can. (Don’t worry, no one will see it!) This will firm leg and buttock muscles, improve blood flow — and keep you mildly amused!

3. Whenever you’re standing on a line, lift one foot a half-inch off the ground. The extra stress on your opposite foot, ankle, calf and thigh, plus your buttocks, will help firm and tone muscles. Switch feet every few minutes.

Health Benefits of Massage

April 8th, 2010
Jonathon Hardcastle asked:

More and more Americans are turning to massage to relieve the stresses of everyday life. It is pleasant and relaxing to receive an aromatherapy massage in a quiet spa. However, massage actually can have significant health benefits beyond the simple relaxation of a basic spa massage.

Massage therapy has been proven to reduce the amounts of the stress hormone cortisol in the body. Cortisol is the hormone that causes the symptoms of stress including muscle pain, irritability, headaches and other physical symptoms. Digestion, which is often directly affected by stress, can be improved by application of regular massages.

Additionally, some scientists suspect that massage may release endorphins which produce a “high” or a sense of well-being similar to that which is achieved by exercise. Because of this effect, massage therapy has been particularly useful in helping arthritis patients who may not be able to exercise regularly. Massage can also help arthritis patients improve the range of motion in their joints.

Massage may also help improve circulation. It is theorized that the stroking motion of massage encourages healthy blood flow and assists in clearing toxins from the blood. The stroking motion may also assist the flow of lymph fluid. Lymph fluid bolsters the body’s immune system, leading to increased resistance to disease.

Shiatsu massage, which uses some of the same principles as acupuncture, tai chi and other types of Chinese medicine can be used to treat more specific illnesses. Unlike a regular massage session at a spa, a shiatsu practitioner will take your medical history and ask you questions about specific symptoms, diet and exercise. Some of the conditions treated by shiatsu massage include asthma, menstrual cramps, arthritis, insomnia and constipation.
